WNC Birth Center Baby Shower
Welcome to the WNC Birth Center Baby Shower page!
We are proud to announce we’re seeing patients and our fifth baby was born September 21st! We want to celebrate our successful opening with all our friends and supporters and ask for your help to ensure the future of this important service for our region.
It Started 5 Years Ago With A Dream...
Over the years, many have wondered why Asheville has not had a birth center, but it was Judy Major who embraced this idea and took the actions needed to make it a reality. Little did she (or anyone else) realize how long and hard the journey would be! Beginning in 2011, a Steering Committee was formed, a regional survey was completed, the Wonderful 100 provided seed money and the WNC Birth Center was launched. By mid-2012, a corporate structure was recognized by the state and the IRS granted the birth center non-profit status in 2014. Then the real work began!!! Women’s Birth and Wellness Center of Chapel Hill became our mentors. Conversations were held within the medical community to identify physician back-up for our midwives, possible locations were considered, fundraising began, a building was rented, an architect hired, renovations planned and completed, staff was hired, national accreditation started and FINALLY . . . . we are ready to celebrate THE REALITY of a BIRTH CENTER in ASHEVILLE.
We Want To Show You Our New Home And Ask For Your Support
Why we need your help NOW === 1) Start-up expenses have proven to be more than we projected and fundraising more difficult than expected. We are in significant debt, and 2) due to complex regulations and insurance contract delays beyond our control, our expenses over the next 6-8 months will unavoidably exceed our income. We’re confident the situation will improve quickly in early 2017, but in the interim we’re looking to EVERY birth center advocate, like you, to give as much as she or he can afford to help us bridge the “financial gap”. We need to raise $50,000 from the Baby Shower and we’re counting on you to help us reach that goal.
Our Current State This First Month...
In barely a month, 20 patients were enrolled and numerous requests come in every day. That demand will increase significantly as insurance contracts and enrollment with Medicaid are established. Reimbursement for our midwives’ professional services is likely to begin in the next month or so, but insurance/Medicaid reimbursement for use of one of our birthing suites (the “facility fee”) may not be secured until later this year or early 2017. For now, women are obliged to deal with higher copays and other immediate expenses for services, but our staff is working with each client individually to find a financial arrangement that benefits both the client and the birth center.
Support Us So We Can Support You And Your Loved Ones
Like early parenting, getting through the first stage of the life of a new business is rarely easy…it takes lots of patience, love, work, support and money. We are so grateful for the support, both monetary and otherwise, that we have received over the past several years, but your generosity NOW is more important than ever to help the WNC Birth Center go from vulnerable to thriving . . .
Thank you and please come to our OPEN HOUSE celebration.
We would not have made it this far without the vision of our team and the support of time and finances from people and businesses like you.
